Geocaching
Well, I started Geocaching today. I've been putting it off for over a year, but now I'm ready.
I picked up two on the way home from work today. It was a start. We'll see how it picks up soon.
I'm going to start local and work my way out from there.
Is anyone else into Geocaching?
Guatemala Sinkholes
Oh wow! I just came across this.
What does one do about this? Is there a solution? Does this interfere with traffic?
I was reading a little news this morning and this caught me off guard.
Guatemala is in a state of crisis today after twin natural calamities struck: First, the Pacaya volcano (just 19 miles from the capital) woke up in a bad mood. Lava flowed, black sand and rock and ash spewed everywhere. A newscaster covering the event, near the volcano, was killed by flying rocks.
Then, tropical storm "Agatha" struck, destroying homes, causing floods, and creating tens of thousands of internally displaced. Infrastructure in this country-where the majority live in poverty-is very poor, and ill-equipped to handle such a double blow. As of last night, official numbers on storm: about 30,000 "refugees," close to 120,000 evacuated, 93 dead and rising.
The poorest always suffer the most when events like this happen, and the two events together caused surreal conditions: knee-deep black sand mud, and "instant concrete" which formed when rains met ash, clogging up drains and laying waste to fragile sewage systems. Said a friend on Twitter, "Water and sand everywhere... it's like the beach, only a lot less fun."

Watermelon Planted
It's 11:48pm and I just sat down inside. It's dark outside... and cool. A light wind blowing. So I have little to complain about.
But I just finished digging up the small patch of area in my yard that I've been meaning to use for vegetables/etc. It stays full sun most of the day.
After working the dirt and compost and mixing in some Miracle Grow, I moistened the ground and put in a few Watermelon plants that I brought home today.
We'll see how my little (late!) garden will turn out.
Open House and my Full Vehicle
I'm about to drive home to El Dorado. I've spent the weekend working at Pittman Nursery's Annual Open House event.
Every year the nursery opens the wholesale grounds to the public for two days. Now that I work at Pittman Nursery Corporation, I'm working the weekend and not just enjoying the event.
But even working, it was a nice weekend.
Either way, I have a vehicle full of roses and other small plants... and a dogwood. And this isn't all of it. I have to bring the rest of it back on another day.
It will be fun to get it all planted. Volunteers to help?
Frosted My Plants
I returned from a family trip to Baton Rouge. It snowed while we were down there. But I heard that the weather wasn’t going to be as bad back home.
Well, when I pulled into the driveway, I noticed that all of the plants that I had left outside looked completely dead. They had apparently experienced something that the weather channel didn’t tell me. I probably just didn’t notice that it was going to get down to 21 degrees over the weekend.
Now I have to figure out what to do to save the plants… if that’s even possible.
Rain and Wreckage
It's still raining as I write. I don't think it will slow anytime soon. It's been a long day. Especially for my mom.
This morning when Bekah woke up, the first thing she asked me for was a cup of water. But the second was if we could go see gran-d. Throughout the morning she repeated this question. At lunch I decided that we would go visit mom (gran-d) after work.
But by mid-afternoon we were being issued tornardo warnings and I was thinking that travelling wasn't a good idea. And Bekah hadn't mentioned it in a few hours so I thought it would be ok.
She asked again around 4:30pm. The rain had slacked a bunch so I thought we would go ahead and try.
Not soon after we had started packing I called my sister. She immediately told me what had happened.
Short version:
A tornado had come through my mom's yard a gobbled up many of the pecan trees and thrown them on the brand new Honda Accord, the fairly new AC, the front porch, and around the yard. These are big trees. The roof of the house is damaged and now leaking in multiple spots. I'm sure that it's ruining the newly installed insulation. The new gutters are questionable. The newly repaired fense needs repair. The storage room out back is missing it's roof. And one of the cats are missing. And the rest is unknown.
But mom's ok.
But now she trapped at home because of downed trees and flooding.
Needless to say, we didn't make it over there because of the weather. But I'm planning on getting over there as soon as possible. I'm not sure mom will be sleeping soundly tonight.
It's still raining. Quite the downpour. This storm isn't near over.
Jumping Pile
We raked leaves today in the front yard. I gave Bekah a little rake and I had a big rake. She enjoyed moving the leaves around for about ten minutes.
Then she saw the pile of leaves that started to form. Down went the rake.
Random Photo of the Day – 20081119
This is a photo I took in August 2004 at Buffalo Point's Indian Rock House at the Buffalo River in northern Arkansas. This shot is from inside the cave.

The Jedi and Sith
I've had this pic for a while. I just thought that it was funny. I thought I'd share.
How great would it be to walk outside and see this happening?!?!
Someone let me know who made this photo. I really want to know.
