Restoring your iPhone

What happens when my iPhone locks up? What if my iPhone freezes? What do I do when my iPhone will not respond? Do I have to take it to the Apple store or the AT&T store? Is my iPhone broken? Is my data gone forever?

The answer is:  Restore
Gone forever? Maybe your recent data will be lost, but your iPhone may be salvageable.

In most cases, you just need to restore your iPhone to the factory settings.

This is what recently happened to me.

I was taking photos with my iPhone. Between photos I was setting the iPhone down. I could see if working to focus on the material on the table. I thought to myself, “I should turn if off between photos to save battery life.” By the time I followed through with my thought, my iPhone had frozen.

I tried a series a button presses with no response.

Finally I chose to hard reboot the iPhone. I pressed the Home button and the Lock button simultaneously. The iPhone shut off abruptly.  I pressed the Lock button again to bring the iPhone back on.

The Apple logo appeared! Great! That should be it. It will reload and all will be well.

No.

The iPhone went to black. I tried this several times and the same response: Apple logo… black….

What to do??

I thought about restoring my iPhone from a backup. That sounds sensible. But I was out-of-town and nowhere near my main home computer.  But I needed my iPhone.

I downloaded iTunes onto a local computer that I was using. Installed.
